His Roots
David, born in China, has won four World Series of Poker gold bracelets along with the 2008 World Poker Classic’s WPT Championship. A former Colorado restaurateur, Chiu took a second job as a poker dealer and later became known as a poker tournament specialist because of his uncanny ability to read opposing players. He attributes most of his reading and concentration abilities to a swimming accident that left him partially deaf in both ears.
Tournament Specialist
David burst on the scene by winning the $2,000 Limit Hold’em event at the 1996 World Series of Poker and hasn’t looked back since. Since winning his first bracelet, David has amassed nearly $6 million in career earnings along with three additional WSOP bracelets.
David has cashed twice in the 2008 World Series of Poker, including a final table (8th Place) in the Event #37 Omaha Hi/Lo Split 8 or Better.
Big Payday in WPT Championship
David Chiu has continued his remarkable tournament play in 2008 by winning the Word Poker Tour Championship in April. David was a 5-to-1 chip underdog to Danish pro Gus Hansen, but was able to stage an extraordinary comeback to overtake Hansen for the title. David took home the top cash prize of $3,389,140 along with the pride of winning a tournament that featured some of the world’s best.
