The Poker Legend
Doyle Brunson is the name every poker player associates with the game of poker, and in 2006 he was voted the #1 most influential force in the world of poker by BLUFF magazine. He revolutionized the game, and is widely considered as the person responsible for the rise of poker as a pop-culture phenomenon.
Brunson holds 10 World Series of Poker bracelets, a World Poker Tour title and is a member of the Poker Hall of Fame. He continues to play in some of the biggest cash games in the world, including the “Big Game” in Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio.
A Born Competitor
Doyle Brunson grew up in a small Texas town. He was a natural athlete who was drafted to play in the NBA before he was sidelined by a leg injury. Brunson’s injury ended his dream of playing in the NBA so he took to the poker table to satisfy his competitive nature. In the 1950s he became the leader of a group of traveling high stakes poker players known as the “Texas Rounders.” This group of poker players is said to have “cleaned Texas dry.” He eventually moved his family to Las Vegas and the rest is history.
The “Doyle Brunson”
In 1976, Brunson won his first World Series of Poker title. The very next year, he went on to win his second. He won both championship titles holding the exact same hand, a full house – tens full of deuces. This feat has branded the hold’em hand, 10-2, the “Doyle Brunson.”
Doyle Brunson forever changed the game of poker when he published Super System, in 1978. It is a complete guide to Texas Hold’em as well as other games of poker and is widely regarded as an essential read for anyone who plays the game. He followed up Super System with Super System 2, which includes insights on new games and strategies from Brunson himself as well as some of the biggest names in poker.
